Before, During & After
Keeping Digital Citizenship Alive!
Now that many schools have one-to-one devices for all students, it is important to make sure all stakeholders understand how to use school devices safely from school staff, to students to families.
Before School
For Staff:
I would request time during our professional development days before school starts for the year to present to all staff, not just teachers and administrators on how to keep ourselves safe online.
We would start with a review of FERPA laws. This helps answer some questions that arise throughout the year as to why certain resources that teachers may want to use are blocked for safety.
I would also have a Canvas class set up to share any information and resources used during presentations throughout the year for staff to refer back to.
One other resource I may start the year with is information about Creative Commons, so if teachers see the "cc" logo on educational resources, they will know how to use them safely and know how to share resources they create themselves.
Throughout the year I would introduce and remind staff of the ISTE Educator Standards and have teachers evaluate their progress toward a standard of their choice at least monthly.
During School
For Students:
During the first two weeks of school, I would organize class time to be able to present to students about keeping themselves safe online while in and out of school.
Depending on the age of the students and the use of one-to-one devices on the campus, I may go over the PWCS Acceptable Use Policy, share this video on "Oversharing your digital footprint" and talk about all the ways they are sharing information that might not be a video or post.
Throughout the year, I would continue to meet with classrooms to share age appropriate information on how to keep themselves safe while online. Common Sense Education has a lot of videos to help explain.
I hope to be in classrooms often to support teachers with introducing new online resources, apps and ways to use familiar technology to enhance student learning and promote differentiated instruction.
Throughout the year, I would like to introduce and work with students on the ISTE Standards for Students though age appropriate activities.
After School
For Families:
At our Back to School Night, I would have a table set up to show parents how to access Parent Vue and our PWCS Digital Citizen page, how to translate the page if needed.
I would introduce families to the Common Sense Media site and give time to explore.
